Von Doersten, M.D. is a board-certified otolaryngologist and is one of 400 physicians in the country who has subspecialty board certification in neurotology (a field of medicine concerning ear surgery), disorders of the inner ear, skull base surgery, and cochlear implantation. After graduation from Dartmouth College, Dr. Von Doersten completed medical school at the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1989. He performed an internship at Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Hospital in Chicago, followed by a second year of general surgery at the University of California Davis. After completing his residency in otolaryngology at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, California, he engaged in a fellowship in neurotology at Vanderbilt for one year and became board-certified in 1996. Since moving to Montana, Dr. Von Doersten has been President of the medical staff at St. Patrick Hospital, is currently President of the Montana Society of Otolaryngology, and is a faculty affiliate of the University of Montana, University of Utah, and the University of Washington. He has served on several boards including St. Patrick Hospital and the Montana Neuroscience Institute. He has developed cochlear implant programs at both St. Patrick Hospital and Community Medical Center. He also participates in research in both inner ear hair cells and traumatic brain injury. In his free time, he is a team leader for a biannual medical mission trip to Guatemala, is an avid cyclist, and helps his wife and two children run a certificated organic cherry orchard in the Flathead.
